Jury’s Choice (2025)
Les jeunesses autochtones au Québec. Décolonisation, fierté et engagement [Indigenous youth in Quebec. Decolonization, pride and engagement], edited by Natasha Blanchet-Cohen and Véronique Picard, Laval University Press, “Mondes autochtones” Collection, 2024.
This edited book constitutes a remarkable contribution to the sociological understanding of contemporary Indigenous youth in Quebec. This work is the fruit of a collaboration between researchers from the academic world (including emerging voices), artists, and young Indigenous persons from various nations, the work stands out for its inclusive and accessible approach that is deeply rooted in lived realities. Blending scientific rigour and creative expression, it combines empirical data with testimonial narratives and graphics-based co-creations (postcards), thus providing reading that is both instructive and engaging. The work highlights the expertise of Indigenous youths in varied fields, such as the environment, education, identity and cooperation, underscoring their active and enlightened role in society. The introduction carefully articulates the collection’s cohesion, reinforcing the interdisciplinary scope of the work, in keeping with the criteria of the Canadian Studies Network. The original subject and diverse pathways of the contributors, as well as the place given to marginalized voices that are too often absent in the dominant discourse, confer on this book undeniable academic and social value. Finally, this edited collection opens up inspiring perspectives for similar initiatives in other provinces, making this work a model of collaborative and engaged research.
The CSN warmly thanks the committee members for this prize.
