Congratulations David Newland!
CSN Best MA (or Equivalent) Thesis or Major Research Paper in Canadian Studies Prize winner

Paper Nation: Conceiving Canada in the Confederation Day Globe

Jury Statement:

This is a highly original exploration of personal Canadian identity, constructed as a dialogue with George Brown, and the editorial he published on 1 July 1867. The author situates himself in the discussion with great honesty and insight, and he explores the complexities of George Brown’s contributions to and understandings of Canada. The author shows the urgency of re-formulating and reconciling non-Indigenous perspectives on Canada with the Indigenous inhabitants of this land. This is a thoroughly engaging and personal essay. As Newland writes: “We need a better story.” (115)

The CSN warmly thanks the committee members for this prize.
